This circular route leads you from the peaceful plains of the Mura Valley into the heart of the Zala Hills. Along the way, you’ll visit picturesque fishing lakes, discover the birthplace of Hungary’s oil industry, and relax beneath the towering conifers of Budafapuszta Arboretum.

This tour is perfect for cyclists who appreciate not only unspoilt nature but also the rich industrial heritage and architectural treasures of Zala.

Muraszemenye and Lake Maróc – A Waterside Beginning

Leaving Muraszemenye, the route heads towards the foothills of the Zala Hills.

Your first major stop is the beautiful Lake Maróc, nestled among the rolling hills. This peaceful anglers’ paradise is the perfect place to unwind before tackling the hillier sections of the route.

Lipseszentadorján and Bázakerettye – The Heart of Hungary’s Oil Country

Following scenic roads lined with pine forests, you arrive in Lipseszentadorján before continuing to the historic village of Bázakerettye.

Often regarded as the birthplace of Hungary’s oil industry, the village still reflects its prosperous past through its well-kept streets and distinctive architecture. During the summer months, the local thermal bath offers a refreshing break for cyclists.

Lake Kistolmács – A Forest Retreat

From Bázakerettye, enjoy a scenic descent through the forest to the crystal-clear Lake Kistolmács.

Relax on the lakeshore, listen to the charming Csömödér State Forest Railway as it passes nearby, or treat yourself to a traditional Hungarian lángos. Afterwards, the route briefly returns to Bázakerettye before continuing through one of the most beautiful forest sections of the entire tour.

Budafapuszta and Szentmargitfalva – Giants of the Forest and Panoramic Views

The highlight of the tour is the magnificent Budafapuszta Arboretum.

Its impressive Douglas firs, giant sequoias and other remarkable tree species create an unforgettable atmosphere throughout the year. From here, the route continues towards Szentmargitfalva, where spectacular views open across the Mura Valley. On exceptionally clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of the distant Alps.

Returning to the Waters

A long and enjoyable descent leads back to Muraszemenye, where you can end your journey by relaxing beside the peaceful oxbow lakes of the Mura.

Difficulty: Moderate, with several more demanding climbs through the hills.

Route Surface: Quiet public roads and paved forest roads with very little traffic.

Recommended Bicycle: Trekking bike, mountain bike (MTB) or e-bike. An e-bike is an excellent choice for tackling the hills comfortably.
