A Relaxing Cycling Loop Through History and Nature

Starting amid the Baroque elegance of Szécsisziget, this scenic circular route winds through the tranquil landscapes embraced by the Kerka and Mura rivers. Along the way, you’ll visit a unique water buffalo reserve, discover charming border villages, and follow the Kerka River on its journey towards the Mura.

This route is an excellent choice for a half-day cycling adventure, offering a wealth of attractions on mostly flat, easy-to-ride roads.

Szécsisziget – Gateway to History

Your journey begins in Szécsisziget, the cultural heart of the Kerka Valley.

Before setting off, take time to visit the elegant Andrássy–Szapáry Castle and the nearby Water Buffalo Reserve. Leaving the village, the route heads south through the lush floodplain meadows that line the Kerka River.

Csörnyeföld and Alsószemenye – Hospitality Along the Mura

As you approach Csörnyeföld, you’ll begin to feel the presence of the nearby Mura River. The village is renowned for its vineyards, excellent wines and warm hospitality, making it the perfect place for a short break.

Continuing to Alsószemenye, you’ll discover the traditional charm of rural Zala, where peaceful village streets and nearby fishing lakes create a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.

Kerkaszentkirály – Where the Kerka Meets Adventure

From Alsószemenye, the route turns north towards the Kerka River once again.

Kerkaszentkirály is a favourite destination for paddlers and nature lovers alike. Pause at the riverside rest area and enjoy the soothing sounds of the flowing water.

The stretch between Kerkaszentkirály and Tormafölde is one of the quietest parts of the entire tour, where nature takes centre stage.

Tormafölde and Return to Szécsisziget

Approaching Tormafölde, the surrounding hills gradually come into view, while the route itself remains comfortably within the valley.

Here you can admire the beautifully maintained gardens and the gentle slopes of Szentvégh Hill.

From here, it’s an easy ride back to Szécsisziget, where the peaceful surroundings of the historic Kerka Watermill Museum provide the perfect place to relax after your journey.
