Borderland Adventure Along the Kerka River – From Muraszemenye to Lendava Castle

Where rivers meet and borders fade away.

This cycling route takes you to one of the most fascinating corners of Southern Zala, where the untamed landscapes of the Kerka and Mura rivers blend seamlessly with the rich history of the Muravidék (Prekmurje) region.

Starting from the waterside village of Muraszemenye, you’ll ride through welcoming rural communities and pristine floodplain forests before crossing into Slovenia and reaching the historic town of Lendava. More than just a cycling tour, this journey is about discovery—along the way you’ll encounter historic military bunkers, remarkable churches and, finally, a magnificent hilltop castle.

Muraszemenye – The Realm of Rivers

Your adventure begins in Muraszemenye, often called the “Land of the Beavers.” Before setting off, it’s worth making a short detour to the nearby oxbow lakes, where the untouched wilderness of the Mura–Drava–Danube UNESCO Biosphere Reserve offers a glimpse into one of Europe’s most valuable river ecosystems.

From here, the route follows the Kerka River upstream towards the northwest.

Kerkaszentkirály and Dobri – Peace Along the River

Following the Kerka, you arrive in Kerkaszentkirály, where it’s worth stopping at the rafting base or the local nature trail.

The peaceful riverside setting and the distinctive Nine-Arch Concrete Bridge create a nostalgic atmosphere. Continuing towards Dobri, you’ll cycle through the gentle meadows and lush green landscapes of the Kerka Valley.

Tornyiszentmiklós – The Last Stop Before the Border

Before crossing into Slovenia, take time to visit the beautiful St. Nicholas Church, an elegant Baroque landmark in Tornyiszentmiklós.

On the edge of the village you’ll also find a fishing lake and a pleasant picnic area—the perfect place for one final break before continuing your journey abroad.

Lendava – Castle, Culture and Spectacular Views

After crossing the border via the village of Pince, you’ll arrive in the charming Slovenian town of Lendava.

Dominating the skyline is Lendava Castle, home to fascinating historical exhibitions and contemporary art displays. The castle terrace rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.

If you still have energy left, continue to the famous Vinarium Observation Tower, where, on a clear day, you can admire the landscapes of four different countries from a single viewpoint.
