Below, the winding Mura Valley stretches into the distance, while the hills of Croatia, the mountains of Slovenia, and on exceptionally clear days even the distant peaks of the Alps come into view.

The Ancient Chestnut Giants

The path leading to the lookout is lined with majestic sweet chestnut trees that are 200 to 300 years old. Their enormous trunks and deeply furrowed bark tell stories spanning centuries, standing as proudly as the ancient beech trees of the nearby Vétyem Primeval Beech Forest.

Visitor Information

Terrain:
The trail leading to the lookout is uphill but well maintained. After rainfall, the clay-rich soils of Zala can become slippery, so sturdy hiking boots are strongly recommended.

Getting There:
The route to St. John Hill and the lookout tower is clearly signposted from the centre of Tormafölde.

Tip:
The picnic area at the foot of the lookout tower is the perfect place to relax with family or friends while enjoying the magnificent scenery of the Zala Hills.
